Friends, family and more explore California's beauty with Lemoore RV Club

Lemoore’s contingent of vagabond explorers, who refer to themselves as the Lemoore RV club, is the brainchild of a few local adventurers who enjoy hitting California’s roads and exploring the state’s many picturesque places – and as an aside, get to bond with friends and breath fresh air.

They’re looking for more members to supplement their growing band of explorers. The Lemoore RV Club, sponsored by the Lemoore Parks and Recreation Department, will have a general meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 10 at 6 p.m. at the Lemoore Veterans’ Hall, located at 411 West D Street.

Upcoming trips include a Feb. 4 sojourn to San Luis Obispo’s Lopez Lake, one of the most pristine sites on the Central Coast – where they plan a little wine-tasting trip. An excursion is planned for Morro Dunes RV Park for about a week from May 14 to May 20, and a trip to Napa's Skyline Wilderness Park is slated for Oct. 8 through Oct. 14.

Two of the club's early organizers and big outdoors enthusiasts are Tom and Louise Hernandez who enjoy hauling their 19-foot pull-behind trailer to various locales in California. “It was our idea, and we approached the Lemoore Parks and Recreation Department,” said Hernandez, who coincidentally served for decades as the city’s Parks and Recreation Director. The department came on board, and Parks Director Jason Glick agreed to help.

“We charged a whole ten bucks,” said Hernandez, “so people felt like they belonged to something.”

The first trip was an expedition to El Chorro Regional Park in San Luis Obispo, a location between Morro Bay and San Luis Obispo on Highway 1, across from Cuesta Community College.

“We had eight rigs that time,” remembered Hernandez. “We go whenever somebody has a good idea.”

The second trip was to California’s Jamestown in the mountains near Lake Tulloch with its big campground. “Nine rigs went up for that one,” said Hernandez. “Usually we schedule them Monday through Sunday. Some come for two nights; some come for the entire time.”

Local Lemoore Police Officer Oscar Lucio is organizing the long trip to Napa for October. The group likes to plan.

To join the RV Club will cost a whopping $15 per year. Oh, a side benefit is that Lemoore’s hearty adventurers manage to eat well and have regular pot-luck dinners during their stays together. “It’s not that we are together 24-7,” said Hernandez. “It’s casual but semi-structured. We’re all good eaters.”
