After four months of mending – and maybe taking it a little easy – Kings County K-9 “Dash” returned to duty with his handler, Deputy Dakota Fausnett, and appeared happy to see him again.

It was about four months ago that Dash was forced into “sick leave” after suffering a gunshot wound during an exchange of gunfire with a suspect wanted in connection with a homicide.

Following the shooting, Dash and his handler were airlifted to an emergency veterinary hospital in Fresno by a California Highway Patrol helicopter. It was there that Dash underwent emergency surgery. He was later transported to the Hanford Veterinary Hospital where he underwent a second surgery to repair additional injuries he sustained during the shooting.

On his first day back to work, Dash immediately ran to Deputy Fausnett's patrol car and found his usual seat by the back door and waited for Deputy Fausnett to let him in.

The deputy was clearly excited to have Dash back on duty, and they’re ready to get back to work.

Kings County Sheriff's officials say the department was overwhelmed by the community’s support Dash received while recuperating.

Dash’s medical expenses, as well as all medical costs associated with the entire Kings County Sheriff's Office K-9 unit, is paid through the Brando Fund, a non-profit organization funded by community donations.

If anyone is interested in donating to the Brando Fund, they can call Hanford Veterinary Hospital at (559) 584-4481.
