Sports Roundup: LHS sports teams begin West Yosemite League action this week. Wrestlers take second in annual Deliddo Invitational

Now the hunt begins. Lemoore's athletic teams begin their quests for West Yosemite League supremacy this week as local athletes and coaches open league play on the road and at home. The Lemoore girls' basketball team, fresh from a consolation championship at the Tulare Mid-Winter Showcase, take on Redwood in Visalia this week (Thursday) while the boys open against the Rangers at home Thursday night at 7:30 p.m.

Lemoore's boys' basketball squad, over the holidays, won three of four games in the prestigious Clovis Elks Tournament, its only loss a 71-63 decision over Fresno High. The Tigers beat Hoover on Dec. 26, 67-46, and after the loss against Fresno, returned to the court for a 78-75 victory over Roosevelt High School. They concluded the tourney with a 71-60 overtime win against Kerman.

In other sports news, the boys’ soccer team, sporting a 6-3-1 record begins its quest for a West Yosemite League title on Jan. 3 with a match at Redwood High School. They’ll play El Diamante in Visalia on Jan. 9 before finally returning home for a league match on Jan. 11 against Golden West at 6:30 p.m.

The varsity girls’ team will face the Rangers in Tiger Stadium on Jan. 3 at 6:30 p.m. and then host the Varsity Lady Tigers Tournament from Jan. 4 through 5. The ladies will host El Diamante on Jan. 9 as WYL play continues.

In other LHS sports action, Lemoore’s William Kloster outscored his wrestling opponents 65-9 in this week’s Deliddo Invitational Wrestling Tournament held at Lemoore High School on Thursday, Dec. 27. The talented junior wrestler, competing at 170 pounds, roared through his bracket to win the division.

Kloster wasn’t the only Tiger to claim victory as freshman wrestler Dylan McDonald defeated Westmont High’s Michael Huh at 106 pounds to win a Deliddo title Thursday.

The Tigers, in addition to its two champions, put together a string of strong finishes to finish just points behind Dinuba High School in the final standings. The Emperors finished with 122.5 points, just ahead of the Tigers’ 119-point total.

Others finishing in the top six included Lucas Gonsalves, a freshman, finishing fifth at 120, and second place junior, Jesse Gaytan at 126 pounds. And at 145 pounds Robert Brooks took third, while at 285 pounds Arturo Valdez, a junior, finished sixth overall.

Kloster was indeed impressive, easily defeating Kingsburg’s Elijah Smith 14-1 in the opener and then Crushing Wasco’s Joel Osorio 20-5 to continue the momentum. He defeated Sierra Pacific’s Rashad Wilson 12-0 to earn a spot in the finals where he outpointed Coalinga’s Skyler Longoria 19-3.

After earning a bye in the first round, McDonald scored a victory over Wasco’s Thomas Vasquez before earning a spot in the finals with a victory over Dinuba’s Jose Figueroa. He then pounded out a 13-2 win over Westmont’s Michael Huh for the tournament championship.

The Tigers had a Friday match at Sanger and then return to Lemoore as they open West Yosemite League wrestling on Jan. 3 at 4:30 p.m.

n afternoon game 36-32 on Friday as part of the Tulare Mid-Winter Tournament. On Jan. 3 the Lady Tigers travel to Visalia for its WYL opener against Redwood High School.
