City Council agrees to give Lemoore City Park a new name: Lemoore Veterans Park
All council members voted for the change, and it came after the Lemoore Planning Commission gave its thumbs up, voting 4-0 to rename the long-standing city park.
A petition to change the name came courtesy of the Lemoore American Legion Post 100. The local Post requested the name change to honor all veterans. In turn, the American Legion would perform a yearly service project and replace the existing sign at the Veterans Memorial in City Park with a sign entitled Lemoore Veterans Park.
Lemoore Parks and Recreation Director Jason Glick told council members that the Lemoore City Park, located at the corner of Fox and Bush streets has been owned and maintained by the City of Lemoore since 1906 and is Lemoore’s oldest park. “It’s been named city park since that time,” said Glick.
Tuesday's action was not the first name change for a Lemoore park. Over the years, two parks have been re-named. The first was Westfield Park, now known as Lemoore Lions Park and 19th Avenue Park as Kings Lions Park. With the renaming of a park, the entities adopting the park provide additional service projects and financial commitments to the parks.
American Post 100 Commander Randy McCord was on hand to answer questions. “Thank you for your consideration,” he said. “It’s a good thing to recognize our veterans.”
The park's name change isn’t the first time the American Legion has had something to say about its city parks. In 2007 the Legion petitioned the Parks and Recreation Commission and City council to construct the Veterans Memorial, a flag display easily seen from Bush Street.
