The 100-plus-year-old carriage house located at the historic Sarah Mooney Museum got a modern update when a group of volunteers, including Sarah Mooney Board President Mike Betcher, replaced the vintage door during a day-long restoration project May 2.

The Mooney group included several volunteers, all of whom put in a full day’s work to replace the carriage house. The small group included the board’s president, Mike Betcher, Mike Williams, Erin Vogel, Tim Schuck, Erin Pearson, and Jonathan Pierce.

“The doors were rotting, so they had to rebuild them completely from scratch,” said Vogel, who spent much of Saturday helping to replace the doors. “They were able to make them look identical to the original. We got there at 9 a.m. and left at about 4 p.m.

Vogel is a third-grade teacher at Cinnamon Elementary and is a Mooney board member who has taken her class on field trips to the local museum. “The old doors were 100 years old. They were falling off,” she said.

The museum paid approximately $150 for the materials for the new doors, and all the labor was, of course, donated. Betcher is scheduled to paint the doors.

The Sarah A. Mooney Memorial Museum is located at 542 West D Street in Lemoore. It is a fully furnished Victorian style home that still reflects the turn-of-the-century lifestyles and houses the history of Lemoore’s early settlers. The museum contains many historical artifacts and collections.

The museum generally offers free tours every Sunday afternoon from noon to 3 p.m. Call (559) 362-4374 for tours. Currently, due to the coronavirus pandemic, the music is closed until further notice.
