A respectable crowd turned out for the finals of California’s men’s and women’s basketball championship games Sunday afternoon in West Hills College Lemoore’s Golden Eagle Arena. When the day was over, City College of San Francisco quickly got past West Valley College in the tournament finals, winning the state title 91-66.

On the women’s side, in a game played earlier in the afternoon, Sierra College took on the state’s No. 1 women’s team in San Joaquin Delta, getting 33 points from Jesse Miller to survive a late San Joaquin rally to win the state championship 76-71 in Sunday’s afternoon opener.

Five technical and flagrant fouls marked the men’s contest. Both teams dug in on defense in the early going as West Valley and San Francisco exhibited tenacious defense in the early going as the two teams combined for just 17 points in the first seven minutes. San Francisco didn’t score for the first three-and-a-half minutes.

City College of San Francisco broke it open in the second half as the Rams bench outscored West Valley 48 to 11.

San Francisco’s Naseem Gaskin was named the tournament’s MVP. He tossed in 20 points and hauled in 14 rebounds.

Sierra College’s Jesse Miller scored 33 points in the earlier women's championship game. Her teammates managed to survive a late San Joaquin Dela run to win the coveted state title Sunday in the state tournament’s final women’s game 76-71.

Sierra College finished at 28-3 on the year. San Joaquin Delta College had an exceptional year, finishing at 30-3. With her team-high 33 points, Miller was named the tourney’s MVP.
