The West Hills College District, which includes one of the newest community colleges in California will be getting a rare campus visit from the governing body of the statewide system of community colleges.

The 10-member of Board of Governors from the California Community College Chancellor’s Office will hold its bimonthly meeting on the West Hills College Lemoore campus Sept. 9-10.

“This is the first time in recent memory that the Board of Governors has visited our campus for one of their board meetings, and it’s a great honor,” said Frank Gornick, Chancellor of West Hills Community College District.” It gives us an opportunity to be hospitable, showcase our facilities at both campuses, and talk to them first-hand about some of the innovative work we’ve been doing to create pathways to success for our students.”

The governing body for the state’s community college system – whose members are appointed by the Governor - regularly meets in Sacramento but occasionally holds its meeting at one of the 112 colleges throughout California.

West Hills Community College District will host the meeting. The board will arrive Sunday, Sept. 8, for a reception at the Tachi Palace Hotel-Casino in Lemoore, where they’ll stay for two nights. On Monday they’ll travel by bus to West Hills College Coalinga for a tour of the campus, then to the nearby Farm of the Future for a tour and presentations on the college’s agriculture and industrial sciences teaching facilities. They will also visit the nearby WHC Coalinga campus before heading to the Harris Ranch Inn and Restaurant for an early lunch. Their board meeting at West Hills College Lemoore’s Conference Center starts at 12:30 on Monday.

A Monday night dinner at the West Hills College Lemoore’s Golden Eagle Arena with the board members and Chancellor’s Office staff will be catered by the WHCL culinary arts department, which will be attended by college staff and faculty as well as invited guests. WHCL President Don Warkentin will offer a welcome, followed by remarks from Manuel Baca, President of the Board of Governors, and Mark McKean, President, Board of Trustees, WHCCD.

On Tuesday, the group will take a brief tour of the WHCL campus at 9 a.m. before returning to the Conference Center to wrap up their board meeting from 10 a.m. until noon.

Dr. Gornick and college faculty leadership will make a presentation during the Monday afternoon meeting.  “We’ll l talk about how we got to where we are by implementing the Student Success Initiative,” Gornick said. “This journey started a number of years ago and could not have continued without the leadership and willingness on the part of faculty to make us a better organization.”
