All the stories former West Hills College Coalinga athletes shared at the 17th annual Hall of Fame dinner had a common theme: were it not for the dedicated coaches and faculty at WHCC, t

hey would not have been as successful.

Frank Smith played football for the Falcons from 1971-1973, and during the height of his professional football career, he never forgot about WHCC. He was an outside linebacker for the Miami Dolphins from 1976-1979.

“This place is the platform for all the success I’ve earned,” said Smith. “Whenever I went to the next level, I always thought of West Hills College.”

Over 165 guests attended the Oct. 26 Hall of Fame dinner and ceremony in the WHCC gymnasium. Individual inductees were Smith, Mickey McNamee, Derrick Chachere, Carlos McCaleb, and Marzell Clayton.

All were in attendance except McNamee, who was unable to attend for personal reasons. Accepting the medal on his behalf was friend and teammate Jerry Merz.

Chachere was another inductee who largely credits WHCC with his athletic success. He attended the college from 1985-1987. While he ran track in high school, Chachere first learned how to throw the javelin at WHCC. He went from never having seen one before to becoming a two-time conference champion in college and an Olympic qualifier.

“There’s something special, and I can honestly sit here today and say it would never have happened if I wouldn’t have come to West Hills,” said Chachere.

The 1968 football team, coached by the late Ken Uselton, was also inducted. From the team, 15 players were in attendance as well as one designated recipient. Richard Womack, the team’s assistant coach, was also in attendance to accept the award.

Dinner was prepared by Jay Mahfood, owner of Perko’s Cafe and Me ‘n Eds Pizza in Coalinga. Mark Gritton, Falcons head coach, was the master of ceremonies for the evening. Gina Tollison, senior athletics secretary, coordinated the organization of the event.

“I feel honored to be part of such a wonderful event,” said Tollison. “The food was great and everyone seemed to have a nice evening.”
