West Hills Community College District launched the first issue of its new magazine filled with information and student success stories. West Hills Magazine highlights some of the newer facilities in the district including the Golden Eagle Arena in Lemoore and Farm of the Future in Coalinga.

The magazine will publish three times a year. Printed copies were mailed to donors and friends of WHCCD, and an online version is now on the district’s website.

“This first issue of the magazine will answer questions you may have about West Hills Community College District, which covers some 3,500 square miles in Fresno and Kings counties and is home to West Hills College Coalinga, West Hills College Lemoore and the North District Center,” said Frank Gornick, chancellor of WHCCD, in his welcome column in the magazine.

In this first issue, Winter 2013, the 28-page magazine features significant achievements of students from both campuses, includes a look at some of the major community events held at West Hills College Lemoore’s Golden Eagle Arena, and shares the story of the Hundred Million Dollar Woman, former grants director Cathy Barabe.

The cover story highlights changes at Farm of the Future such the new solar farm that will be completed in February, expected to save the college $4.8 million over the next two decades. The story also covers the growth of the Farm and involvement by industry partners such as Paramount Farms, who held an agriculture summer camp at WHCC for children of their employees.

The magazine also offers an inside look at the work of the WHCCD Foundation and its $4 million endowment drive for the President’s Scholars program, which offers qualifying high school seniors a two-year scholarship at WHC, $250 per semester for books and priority registration.

“In these pages you’ll learn that we are proactive at being good stewards of our public and private funds, relentlessly focused on innovative ways to help students stay in school and reach their goals, and constantly striving to serve and improve the communities we touch,” said Gornick in his column.
