High school rodeo stars gather at West Hills College this weekend for rodeo event

More than 120 students from 15 area schools will compete at the West Hills College Coalinga rodeo grounds this weekend. The event is sponsored by the California High School Rodeo Association.

Junior high and high school students will participate from cities including Coalinga, Lemoore, Hanford, Madera, Exeter, Fresno and Bakersfield. Qualifying rounds will begin Friday, Jan. 17 at noon with signups beginning at 11 a.m.

Events include barrel racing, goat tying, pole bending, bull riding, bronc riding, team roping, tie-down roping, ribbon roping, break-away roping, bareback riding, steer wrestling, and chute dogging. Winners will be awarded all-around prizes which include buckles, jackets and halters.

Students will compete for prizes during rodeo events Saturday, Jan. 18 through Sunday, Jan 19. Events begin 8 a.m. each day are expected to wrap up around 4 p.m. The event is open to the public.
