Lemoore’s all-time leading rusher is taking his considerable talents up north come football season. On Wednesday, Lemoore High’s Richard Doctor, flanked by his parents, signed a letter of intent to attend Humboldt State University to play football and study Environmental Resource Engineering.

Doctor, who rushed for a record 2,504 yards as a senior and scored 32 touchdowns for his Tiger team that went 7-5 this past season and 3-3 in the West Yosemite League, took a picturesque drive to the Eureka-Arcata region recently and apparently liked what he saw.

“I did a visit there about three weeks ago and I really liked the campus,” said Doctor. “I like the way the football team has been playing. It just seemed like that’s the place I want to be.”

Doctor will play for a Lumberjacks team coached by Rob Smith, who took over the team in 2008 who in only a couple of years led his team to the top of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference in 2011 and then nearly won the championship again in 2012. Smith is a two-time GNAC Coach of the Year and in his entire career Smith has earned the award nine times.

Doctor will face some stiff competition come August when he reports for camp at Humboldt State. The Lumberjacks recruited a pair of exciting freshman runners and Doctor is looking forward to the challenge.
