Kings Lions get their wish, council approves park adoption

The Lemoore City Council Tuesday night voted to allow the Kings Lions Club to officially sponsor the 19th Avenue Park. The local service club, which recently held a well-attended Brewfest at the park, wanted to rename the park the “Kings Lions Complex.”

A week ago, the Lemoore Recreation Commission voted 5-0 to approve the Lions request.

One of the founding members of the Kings Lions Club, Jeff Garcia, petitioned the Recreation Commission at a pair of meetings this past summer, including one as recently as Sept. 9, when the commission gave its unanimous approval to rename the park.

Garcia cited the need for a concession stand, new restrooms, playground and expansion of the electrical system for events. He said the Lions proposed that they award the city a five-year commitment of $2,500 per year, totaling $12,500 to be donated toward development of the park.

He also offered to have the Lions Club reevaluate its commitment after the five-year term is up.

The Kings Lions Club has committed to honoring and re-commemorating the currently named Vieira Field with the history and information of the honoree and to name the second field for a prominent citizen that is yet to be determined.

The Lions also committed to providing manpower as needed throughout the year to work alongside the city and community for ongoing development projects.
