Rotary Club dishes up ice cream at Lemoore Elementary

Members of the Lemoore Rotary Club volunteered Oct. 1 at Lemoore Elementary School to scoop and serve an estimated 375 ice cream cones to students and their grandparents -- in the course of about 75 minutes.

The occasion was the school's annual Grandparents Day, which serves as a kickoff to a book fair and also features lunch. Rotarians Ron Meade and Charlotte Meade led the effort, part of the Lemoore Year of Literacy, an initiative by Rotary President Walt Stammer III.

After the book fair, Rotary purchased volumes that are presented to the community speaker at each weekly meeting. The speaker signs a book, and then Rotary donates it to a local school library. Rotary also regularly reads books to third-grade students at several schools.
