Former Lemoore tennis coach competes at USTA championships

Hanford’s Larry Guevara won three matches in the consolation round of the USTA National Men’s 55 Hard Court Championships before losing in the semi-finals to Steve Hanson of Baltimore, Maryland 4-6, 6-1, 6-2.

The event was held November 3-9 at La Quinta Tennis Gardens in Indian Wells, the site of the BNP Paribas Open tennis tournament. Guevara lost in the first round to Boris Serebro of White Plains, NY 6-0, 6-1, then won 7-6 (5), 6-4 against David Burgess of Keloena, BC,  and 6-7, 6-4, 7-5, against Brian Pedersen of Bermuda Dunes, CA, and 6-0, 6-1 against Scott Strasenburgh of Westbrook, ME.

There were 77 players entered in singles and 26 doubles teams.  Mike Fedderly, seeded second, of Palm Desert, CA, beat first seed Valis Wilder of Fort Worth TX 6-7, 6-1, 6-4 in the finals for the singles title. The third-seeded team of Ross Hessler of Mission Viejo, CA and Gregory Hing of Paradise Valley, AZ won the doubles title against the first seed team of Mike Fedderly and Michael Tammen of Portland, OR, 2-6, 7-5, 6-2.
