Kings County Sheriff warns of scam involving bogus phone calls

The Kings County Sheriff’s Department is asking citizens to be aware of what it says is a scam. Recently, county officials started to receive calls from concerned citizens regarding a phone scam involving the Kings County Sheriff’s office.

A caller identifies himself as a ranking member with the Kings County Sheriff’s office and informs the caller they had missed jury duty and threatens to put out a bench warrant for their arrest.

The male caller attempts to illicit credit card numbers from the callers in order to resolve the issuance of a bench warrant.  The fictitious caller also attempts to record the conversations, no doubt to record any identifying information given over the phone.

During some of these harassing calls, the fictitious caller claims there are members deputies parked near the unsuspecting caller's house and ready to arrest them if payment is not made.

Several of the unsuspecting receivers of these calls indicate the male representing himself as a member of the Kings County Sheriff’s office sounds very legitimate and convincing. The fictitious caller has used the name Lt. Jerry Nelson, Sgt. Charles Fletcher and even makes references to names of fictitious judges issuing the warrants.

The Kings County Sheriff’s Office does not solicit any monies or payments over the phone for any services rendered by their department. This is an ongoing scam and the Sheriff’s office urges those who may have fallen victim of this scam to contact Detective Weimer (559) 852-3211x 2804 at the Kings County Sheriff’s office.
