Lemoore's Jacob Gonzalves will be gunning for another West Yosemite League championship at Golden West High.

Despite a loss earlier this season to Redwood High School in a dual match, Lemoore’s varsity wrestling program thinks it may again have the necessary tools to capture its second West Yosemite League title in a row and its 21st title in the past 22 years. Two years ago the Tigers lost unexpectedly to Redwood High School in the league finals, but rebounded last year with a scary win over Hanford.

The WYL meet will be held at Golden West High School on Thursday, Feb. 11.

Lemoore had several of its top wrestlers sidelined in the dual meet loss to the Rangers earlier this season, but expect to have a full complement come Thursday as the Tigers seek another league championship.

The Tigers indeed have some talent, including a pair of defending league champions in Jacob Gonzalves and Angel Solis, both of whom are eyeing league titles again. Other favorites included newcomer Gary Joint (132 pounds), Greg Guzman at 138 pounds, and Noah Wright, at 285 pounds, all of whom are expected to do well in the league meet.

Those who qualify at the WYL meet will advance to the Yosemite Divisionals Feb. 19-20 at Clovis High School and from there qualifiers will advance to the Central Section Masters Feb. 27 at Lemoore High School.

The State Wrestling Championships will again be held at Rabobank Arena in Bakersfield March 4-5.
