Lemoore’s surging varsity girls’ softball team won four of six games in the Lady Drillers Softball Tournament which began Thursday in Bakersfield. Lemoore opened with Rosamond High on Thursday, beating the Roadrunners 8-0, but unfortunately dropped a 1-0 contest to Ridgeview.

On Friday the Tigers won twice, beating Independence 2-1 and then Delano 10-0. With the pair of wins, the Tigers advanced to the Silver bracket finals on Saturday where they opened with a 7-3 win over Chavez High and then lost a 2-0 heartbreaker to Oaks Christian.

“The final game was another very tight game,” said Tiger Coach Dione Ewing. “Some errors allowed them to score two in the first, and then we were able to hold them the rest of the game. We got runners on but failed to get them home and lost 2-0.”

Ewing said there was much to love about the tournament.  “Overall, I was pleased with our performance. It's still early so there are definitely some things we need to work on but I think we are in a good spot right now.”

The Tiger coach had nothing but raves for her pitching, much of which came from the arm of Britney Antuna who pitched a perfect game and a 1-hitter on Friday. “On Friday she pitched a no hitter until the last inning when a batter got a base hit on a bunt,” said Ewing.

“In the second game, she pitched a perfect game. I was very happy with how effective she was. Britney pitched all six games and mixed her speeds and spins well to keep batters off balance.”

Ewing went on to say her squad got solid hitting from Alyssa Vasquez, Antuna, Jessica Hurd and Sierra Phelps.
