Sheriff's K-9 dog Max passes away

The Kings County Sheriff's Office on Friday announced the passing of retired Sheriff's K-9 "Max."  Max, who was 12 years old, served the citizens of Kings County for five years as an apprehension dog.

He was directly responsible for the capture of many violent felons, as well as keeping his handler and partners safe. When not chasing criminal violators, Max would participate in many community activities, including meeting children and students who would get a chance to learn about him and his duties.

Following Max’s retirement, his handler and partner, Sergeant Chris Barsteceanu, purchased Max from the Sheriff’s office.  Max lived for many years after retirement as a family pet.  Max's last ride to the veterinary hospital was in the back of a Sheriff's Office K-9 patrol car where he loved to be on the very same day of his passing due to cancer.

Sergeant Barsteceanu and his family appreciate the respect of their privacy during this matter.  Any cards, letters, or condolences may be sent to the Kings County Sheriff's Office at 1444 W. Lacey Blvd., Hanford, Ca. 93230.
