After blitzing the valley’s competition and going undefeated in their first four matches, Lemoore’s ladies dropped a pair of matches in the prestigious San Luis Obispo Varsity Girls Volleyball Tournament this past weekend (Sept. 9-10). The Tigers hope to rebound with a 6:30 p.m. match Wednesday (Sept. 14) against Hanford West to open West Yosemite League play.

In San Luis Obispo, the Tigers lost against powerful Tribuca Hills, the tournament’s No. 1 seed, 14-25, 17-25. “We played really well,” said Tiger Coach Rachel Taylor, “but they were just better and much bigger.”

The Tigers also lost to Buena High School 13-25, 21-25 and fall to 5-3 overall after going 1-3 in the weekend tourney. “Although we went 1-3 in the tournament, we played really well and got better,” said Taylor. “These teams we played are very good and playing them helps us to improve our play.”

Earlier though, Lemoore’s varsity girls’ volleyball team went unbeaten after four matches, the latest victories coming last Tuesday in Tulare as the Tigers easily got past “The Tribe” in straight sets 3-0, and then beating Kingsburg Thursday night in Lemoore 3-1.

Against Kingsburg, Lemoore beat the Vikings 25-17 in the opener and followed with a 25-21 decision in game two. The Tigers fell 25-22 in the third set before rebounding to take the final 25-16, and the match 3-1.

Annemarie Schalde had 10 kills on the night while Kele Wheelman and Aiyana Moore each had eight kills as the Tigers dominated the Vikings.

While the games against Tulare Tuesday night were close, the Tigers still blanked the Tribe in three straight sets, taking the first match 25-14 before scoring a 25-22 win in the second game and then a 25-23 victory in the final.

Wheelman had seven kills while Moore had five for the Tigers.
