The West Hills College Lemoore women’s basketball team took an early 16-15 lead into the second quarter of Saturday afternoon’s Central Valley Conference matchup with perennial power Fresno City College, but the Golden Eagles early lead, while impressive in the early going, evaporated quickly.

The Rams exploded in the second period, outscoring the host Golden Eagles 27-8 and never looked back as Fresno City College improved to 3-0 in the conference, defeating the Golden Eagles 73-40. West Hills fell to 1-2 in the conference and 8-10 overall.

The Golden Eagles hope to get back into the conference race when they hit the road on Wednesday, Jan. 11 for a matchup with Reedley.

Fresno City’s Kory Brooks did the most damage in the second quarter, connecting on a trio of three-point baskets as the Rams quickly took back the lead. Brooks led a well-balanced scoring effort with 14 points. Teammate Mikayla Mabie finished with 13 points.

The Golden Eagles were led in scoring by Tiffany Smith’s 15 points. Kiesha Loftin finished with 10 points, including a pair of baskets in the second period to keep the Golden Eagles within striking range.

The Rams were up 23-22 when they went on a binge, outscoring the Eagles 14-0 before Smith scored with 1:38 left in the half. It was during that stretch that Brooks hit on a pair of three-point baskets. A series of turnovers by West Hills didn’t help either as the Rams took advantage.
