Lemoore’s two-time West Yosemite League Champ Angel Solis will continue his wrestling career as a Bulldog, joining teammate Gary Joint at Fresno State, where new coach Troy Steiner is gearing up for the school’s return to Division I wrestling.

Solis announced today (Jan. 16) that he has verbally committed to the Bulldog program. The 182-pound wrestler is well on his way to another league championship. This past weekend he won the 5 Counties championship in Fountain Valley.

Joint, at 132 pounds, inked a letter of intent recently to join the Bulldog team.

“Angel has worked extremely hard to get where he is at today,” said his coach, Marcio Botelho. “He has put in the time in the wrestling room. He is a very respectful kid both on and off the mat, and he works equally as hard in the classroom. “

Solis will be going for his third WYL championship, and he is well on his way. The Tigers take on Golden West in Visalia on Thursday. In their WYL opener, the Tigers blanked Redwood 76-0.

A year ago, Solis finished third in the Central Section and attended the California State Meet in Bakersfield where he was just a win away from placing in the top eight. “He is having a great season so far this year and we expect great things from him,” said Botelho.

It was Botelho who delivered the news to Solis that Fresno State was offering him a scholarship. “Knowing that Lemoore wrestling has helped make his dream of being a Bulldog come true is special,” added Botelho.

Botelho, a former state champ while a Tiger, also wrestled at Fresno State.
