Just short of a year since Lemoore’s varsity boys’ basketball team won the Division II Central Section championship, Coach Joel Sligh’s troops find themselves on the outside trying to get back into the West Yosemite League championship hunt.

The Tigers didn’t do themselves any favors after losing to Hanford Friday night in the school’s Event Center 77-55, a loss that dropped them to 2-4 in the WYL, with just six league games left to play. The Tigers gave a non-league contest Monday (Jan. 23) against Centennial High School in Bakersfield.

The boys return to WYL action on Wednesday (Jan. 25) with a home game against Hanford West. The Lemoore ladies will play the Huskies in Hanford.

The Tigers, in December’s Kings County Classic, defeated the Bullpups 69-60.

Lemoore held a 22-21 first quarter lead before the Bullpups erupted for 30 second-quarter points to take a commanding 51-31 lead into the second half. The Tigers were led by Joemyl Ragunton’s 19 points, but it wasn’t enough as the Tigers fell to 7-14 overall.

For the Bullpups, Karsten Gregory had 15 points and Jayshaun Collins had 13 points as Hanford improved to 12-9 overall and 4-2 in league play. Hanford, with Friday night’s victory, is just one game out of first place in the WYL. Redwood currently leads the pack with a 4-1 mark.

Friday night’s girls’ basketball game in Hanford had to be postponed due to the weather. Lemoore High School Athletic Director Brady Holaday told The Leader that continuing rainstorms caused a leak in the Hanford gym. The two teams will play Monday night. The Tigers go into that contest sporting a 3-2 record in the WYL.
