Tigers to send seven wrestlers to Masters Tournament at Clovis High; Joint second

The state’s No. 1 wrestler from Lemoore, Gary Joint, was upset by Clovis North’s Chris Deloza, the state’s No. 5 man, in the 132 pound finals Saturday afternoon to spoil the Tigers’ last bet for a Yosemite Division championship.

The talented Joint will have opportunity to reverse that upset on Jan. 24-25 at Clovis High School when he joins sseven of his teammates at the Central Valley Masters Tournament, the final step to a state championship. Against Joint, Deloza rallied 9-7 in the final period to hand the Tiger wrestler a surprising defeat.

Top 10 finishers earn a trip to the Masters.

Other Tigers to make the Masters field include Joe Romero who finished 7th in the two-day tournament in Bakersfield, while Greg Guzman lost his third-place match to Buchanan’s Tristan Zamilpa 5-3, but still finished fourth overall to earn a spot in this week’s Masters.

Angels Solis was a fifth-place finisher, defeating Stockton’s Nick Maiden. Jacob Gonsalves finished eighth overall following a loss to Central High’s Chris Aparicio, and heavyweight Noah Wright made it to the semi-finals before losing to eventual undefeated champ Seth Nevills. Wright eventually wound up in fourth position.

John Panduro, at 170, won three matches on his way to a 9th place finish, losing his last contest to Hanford’s Isaiah Corona.

The Tigers finished eighth overall in Bakersfield with 120.5 points. The top spot went to Buchanan High with 342.5 points. Buchanan advanced all 14 of its wrestlers to this week’s Masters.

The CIF State Wrestling Championships are scheduled for March 3-4 at Bakersfield’s Rabobank Arena.
