Kings County hires new CAO to replace longtime retiring administrator Larry Spikes

Rebecca Campbell, who has worked for Kings County since 2005, will take on the new CAO role on January 1, 2018, and she comes well equipped to take on the county’s top administrative position.
Campbell served as the Assistant CAO before her appointment and has been in the county’s administrative offices since 2007. In her prior role as the assistant, she was responsible for day-to-day operations of the executive department, long-range planning, and implementing policies of the Board of Supervisors.
Campbell was instrumental in Kings County directly receiving $74 Million in federal and state grant funds for various county public safety and health-care related programs.
Before working for Kings County, Campbell served ten years in the United States Navy as an electronics technician, and while stationed in Keflavik, Iceland, she led the building and relocation of a North Atlantic communications facility. She also served as a career counselor to assist sailors with their career paths. She has a master’s degree in business administration.
Campbell will replace Spikes, who has served as the Kings County Administrative Officer since 1993. “It has been a privilege to serve the county and to mentor under Mr. Spikes,” she said. “I am deeply honored to be appointed as the next County Administrative Officer. Kings County will continue to grow, and with that comes opportunities and challenges. I look forward to working with leadership, staff, and the community to make decisions on how the county will look ten to 20 years from now.”
As CAO, Campbell will oversee an annual budget of $330 million and a staff of 1,550. She will be the fourth CAO in Kings County’s history.
