A routine traffic stop turned into a high-speed chase in the early morning hours of Dec. 28 as Kings County deputies stopped a suspect, Eric Phillips, driving with an expired registration in at 17th Avenue and Davis Circle.

Initially, the suspect, driving a 2000 Cadillac Catera, gave deputies a false name, Brian Phillips. A deputy later determined his real name was Eric Phillips, who, according to records, had a pair of misdemeanor warrants out for his arrest.

While the deputy ran a records check, Phillips drove away at a high rate of speed. Deputies immediately pursued the suspect, chasing Phillips for several miles. Phillips, according to deputies, drove at speeds more than 100 miles per hour, failing to stop at several stops signs and, at times, driving in opposing lanes of traffic.

The pursuit continued to 19th Avenue and Highway 198 in Lemoore. Phillips drove his Cadillac toward the eastbound ramp of Highway 198, hitting the concrete center median and losing control of the vehicle. The suspect regained control and drove westbound on the eastbound off-ramp. Phillips, according to deputies, lost control of the Cadillac a second time sliding off into the grass center median.

According to deputies, the suspect opened his door and fled on foot. They chased Eric for approximately 80 yards until he stopped running. Eric turned around and began quickly walking toward the deputies and was taken into custody.

Eric was booked into Kings County Jail on several felony charges and is being held on $150,000.00 bail.
