The Leader learned late Wednesday night that Friday's expected home football opener has been canceled due to COVID-19 issues with the Tigers' first opponent, Hanford West High School.

The game was to be the first of four pandemic-delayed football games slated for the spring season.

Lemoore Coach Rich Tuman said that instead of the regularly scheduled game, the Lemoore's varsity squad Friday will hold a "purple and gold" team scrimmage at 5 p.m. He said family members are welcome to attend.

Tuman said the Tigers intend to complete the rest of the season, a shortened spring slate of games that continues next Thursday (April 1) with a home game against Memorial High. The Tigers also have an April 9 game against Tulare Western at 5 p.m. and concludes its three-game season with a home contest against Hanford High School - the annual Milk Can game.

While certainly understanding the COVID-19 issue, Tuman is understandably disappointed or his players. "These kids have been going for nine months, and they just can't seem to get a break. I'm really disappointed." He added that his team members have been working hard in anticipation of Lemoore's football opener, delayed since last August.
