On Wednesday, July 14th, 2021, at the age of 85, Tommie Beck Steelman passed away from her fourth battle with cancer. Tommie was born to Alonzo and Bessie Beck on August 20th, 1935, in Mobeetie, Texas. She learned early how to farm, cook, clean, sew, and care for others. In 1945, her family moved out West to Lemoore, California.

The third born of ten, Tommie helped raise her siblings, especially her little brother and the three little sisters. Tommie was a bright, outstanding student, excelling early, and continued to be a lifelong learner. She was the mother of two beautiful daughters Kari Steelman and Deanna Steelman.

Those who knew Tommie knew she loved to read, often a book a day. Intelligent yet relatable, Tommie was always a person to lean on. She was dedicated to her family and always was the first to call or send a note. She was a religious woman who prayed every night. She could easily complete any task working in banks and casinos. She was skilled at using her hands. She loved to cross-stitch, sew her children and grandchildren's clothes, and craft family Christmas stockings.

Tommie loved life! She loved to go out dancing and meeting new people. She drank wine and enjoyed good food. Tommie had an acute understanding of society and was ahead of her time. She had many friends and shaped many lives. Her life was not without hardships. She suffered the loss of her young daughter Kari. She fought many illnesses, conditions, and circumstances. But she always remained on her feet, working and loving!

Tommie was preceded in death by her daughter Kari Steelman, father Alonzo Beck, mother Bessie Beck, sisters Zula Beck and Carole Eastus, and brothers Lonnie Beck and Wayne Beck.

Tommie is survived by her daughter Deanna Steelman, granddaughters Kari Rhoades and Anita Adams, great-granddaughter Zula Adams, sisters June Beck, Susie Sanders, and Cleta Frederiksenand brothers William “Bill” Beck and David “Butch” Beck.

We ask that you pray for Tommie’s family. It was Tommie’s last wish to be spread in the Gulf of Mexico and float back home to Texas. Please share memories of Tommie and keep her in your hearts.
