On February 11 at about 2:30 p.m., while working in Avenal, a King County deputy spotted a 2000 Honda Civic and decided to run a record check on the vehicle. Kings County Dispatch advised the deputy that the car had been reported stolen according to the Avenal Police Department.

The deputy stopped the Honda over and ordered the driver to place his hands out of the driver’s side window. The driver, later identified as Oscar Ayala, refused to show his hands, and he continued to move around inside the vehicle. According to the deputy, Ayala yelled, wanting to know why he had been pulled over.

The deputy told Ayala that he had been stopped because the car he was driving had been reported stolen.

At that point, Ayala placed the car in drive and drove away at a high rate of speed. The deputy and Avenal Police Department officers pursued the suspect. The chase continued through Avenal and then north on State Route 33. Law enforcement officers say Ayala drove at speeds more than 100 mph and failed to stop at signs along the way.

Once Ayala reached the dirt access road leading to 47930 Lost Hills Road in Coalinga, he turned east and headed toward the community known to the locals as “Tune Town.” The suspect then drove around the area, “spinning donuts.”

According to deputies, the suspect finally lost traction, spun out of control, and came to a stop. As authorities exited their vehicles, Oscar regained traction and took off a second time. The pursuit continued several more miles until Ayala made a sharp turn and lost traction again. As Oscar lost control, an officer from the Avenal Police Department was forced to slam on the brakes of his police unit.

The police unit failed to stop in time and slammed into the Honda, causing moderate damage.

Deputies ordered Ayala to exit the car, and he refused. The deputy opened the driver’s side door and removed him from the Honda. Law enforcement officers arrested Ayala.

Deputies booked Ayala into the Kings County Jail on auto theft charges, receiving stolen property, and evading an officer with wanton disregard of public safety. His bail was set at $95,000.
