The Kings County Sheriff’s Office aircraft (Air1), while patrolling the skies over Kings County on Saturday, April 23, near the area of the Santa Rosa Rancheria, spotted a subject later identified as Norberto Lopez (39), who, according to officials, shined a laser pointer a total of five times at the aircraft.

The suspect, Lopez, departed in a vehicle. The aircraft's pilots radioed deputies, who promptly stopped Lopez.

Deputies approached the driver’s side window and spotted a black laser pointer on the seat next to the suspect. Deputies indicate that Lopez lied about his name and instead provided the deputies with the name and date of birth of a subject currently serving time in prison.

Lopez told the authorities that he shined the laser pointer at a blinking light in the sky, believing it to be a star. Deputies arrested Lopez and booked him into the Kings County Jail for assault and battery on an aircraft.

During a fingerprint scan, sheriff’s officials discovered the name Norberto gave was not his. Deputies conducted a warrant check revealing that Lopez had three active Kings County warrants issued for his arrest with a total bail of $230,000.

Later, deputies say Lopez admitted to giving another name because he had active warrants.

Deputies charged Lopez with assault and battery on an aircraft and false impersonation in addition to the three Kings County warrants, with his bail being set at $325,000.
