Upon arrival, the deputies found a victim bleeding from his face. The victim told deputies that his nephew, Fernando Alvarez, assaulted him, pulled a handgun from his waistband, and fired multiple rounds into the air.
Alvarez was last seen running from the area.
The victim told deputies that he confronted Alvarez because he had brought a handgun into a home where there were small children present. The suspect was apparently upset at being confronted, and he punched the victim in the face and then fired several rounds into the air.
Deputies searched the area in an attempt to locate Fernando. As the search unfolded, a citizen called Kings County dispatchers and reported that a subject had just run through her backyard. Deputies responded to the location and found the suspect hiding behind a telephone pole.
Deputies arrested Alvarez, and during a search of the area, deputies located a black Hi-Point 9mm handgun. The handgun was hidden on top of a vehicle's right rear passenger tire.
Records check revealed that Alvarez had previously been convicted of a felony and was not permitted to possess a firearm.
Deputies booked Alvarez into the Kings County Jail on charges of assault with a firearm, exhibiting a fire in public, willful discharge of a firearm in a negligent manner, and being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm. His bail was set at $105,000.
