Kings County Sheriff's Department warns locals about scam phone calls

The Kings County Sheriff’s Office is warning local citizens about calls to citizens that the department says are false.

The sheriff’s office refers to the unwanted phone messages as scam calls.

Sheriff’s officials say that random citizens are being called by subjects identifying themselves as a sergeant or lieutenant with the Kings County Sheriff’s Office. Unsuspecting citizens are told by the suspected scammers that they have warrants and that not to be arrested, they must provide payment.

These calls are not from the Kings County Sheriff’s Office, say officials, and are entirely fraudulent. The Kings County Sheriff’s Department is warning citizens that if they receive these calls, they should not provide monetary or personal information.

The suspected scammers are asking victims to transfer money via a Bitcoin ATM.

Sheriff’s officials urge anyone contacted and suspect foul play not to hesitate to contact the Sheriff’s Department.
