West Hills College Lemoore lady hoopsters in the hunt to win Inaugural Golden Eagle Classic

The West Hills College Golden Eagles would love to win their inaugural Golden Eagle Classic, and they made a point of it by cruising past Los Angeles Southwest Community College Friday night in strong fashion 71-60.

West Hills Lemoore improved to 7-6 on the season.

The Golden Eagles hope to continue their drive to the tourney title by beating Modesto Junior College in a 6 p.m. matchup tonight (Dec. 21) in the Golden Eagle Arena.

The three-day tourney features teams from throughout California. Participating teams, in addition to Modesto, include L.A. Southwest, Mission College, Sacramento City College, COS, Rio Honda College and Allan Hancock College.

Against Southwest College, the Golden Eagles had difficulty in the first half breaking away from their opponents, but toward the end of the first half, WHCL finally broke loose to capture a 35-27 lead. In the second half the Golden Eagles kept their distance and Southwest never seriously threatened.

Freshman Dilay Sonmez, a foreign exchange student from Belgium, led the Eagles with 13 points. Nereyda Padilla, from Kingsburg High School, had 12 points while Kalia Parker (Hanford West) and Jordan Lasiter (Chowchilla) each scored 11 points.
