Lemoores Esperanza Cadena battles for state title in girls' wrestling

Lemoore High School could very well have another state champion in wrestling, but this time it may be on the female side as Esperanza Cadena, coming off a superb performance Central Section finals where she took top honors in the 126-pound division.

Cadena and her two teammates, Katelynn Magallon, who also won in the 160-pound weight class, and Cassandra Sandoval, who finished second at 106 pounds will be in Visalia this weekend for the California CIF State Girls Wrestling Tournament. The State Tourney will be held at the Visalia Convention Center Friday and Saturday.

“Our girls really picked it up and worked very hard,” said Tiger Head Coach Marcio Botelho. “They performed at a very high level. Esperanza dominated her weight class. She could very well win a state title,” said Botelho. “She has a really good chance at winning in Visalia.”

As a team Lemoore finished fourth in the Central Section tournament. Selma took top honors in the tournament.

Cadena was indeed impressive beating Selma’s Sadie Alvarez in the finals 13-4. Magellan had an easier route to victory appearing all alone in her weight class to earn a trip to Visalia. Sandoval ended up losing in the finals to Brittany Wynn from Granite Hills High School.
