There was definitely a scent of “Tiger” in the air at Tulare Union High School’s Bob Mathias Stadium Friday night. Not only did five former Tiger football stars participate in the 47th Annual Tulare-Kings All Star Football Game, but they also played key roles in delivering their West team to an easy 28-7 victory.

The game certainly had a Lemoore flavor. For starters the Lemoore Kiwanis Club, charter members of the game, orchestrated this year’s game under the guidance of game chairman and current Kiwanis President Bob Clement. Even the Tigers regular season football announcer, Jay Salyer, braved the heat and humidity to lend his golden throat to the event. Salyer even sang the National Anthem.

But it was the players who really stood out Friday night, including record-setting running back Richard Doctor, who ran for 140 yards on 18 carries as he and fellow back ReShaun Davis shook up the East’s offensive line.

Doctor did get a little help from Mission Oak’s Elijah Porchia who contributed a pair of second half touchdowns to break open a 7-0 West halftime lead. Doctor scored on a 22-yard run late in the fourth quarter to account for the final margin.

Opening holes for Doctor, Porchia and Davis were Lemoore’s offensive stars Kameron Gomness and Adrian Garza as the West team racked up a total of nearly 400 yards rushing. Even wide receiver Trenton McGuey got into the act, hauling in a long pass from Laton quarterback Manual Cruz in the first half.

The West’s first score came in the first drive of the game. With Doctor running easily, the West marched 80 yards on 14 plays and scored on a 14-yard touchdown from Cruz to Delano’s Jose Ayon.

The East still leads the overall series 24-16. The East beat the West 28-10 last year.
