Large crowd greet winners at men's and women's state community college championships held at West Hills Lemoore

Fullerton City College breezed through the first two rounds of the men’s California Community College Athletic Association’s (CCCAA)  State Basketball Tournament, held this past weekend at West Hills Community College. In the state title game, Fullerton College defeated City College of San Francisco 83-73 for the state championship.

On the women’s side, in a game played shortly after the men played on Sunday afternoon, Orange Coast College held on for a 78-71 victory over Butte Community College earning the 2023 state community college title.

In the men’s contest, Fullerton took a big 43-27 lead into the halftime locker room but had to hold on as San Francisco CC outscored  Fullerton in the second half 46-40.

Leading Fullerton’s offense was Kobe Newton with 25 points. Shaquil Bender contributed 23 points to the state title win.

City College San Francisco was led by Mezziah Oakman’s 14 points while Te’Jon Sawyer and EJ Neal each contributed 14 points.

On the women’s side Orange Coast College (32-1) held on for the 78-71 over a strong Butte College team to win the state women’s title. Leading Orange Coast’s scoring was Meghan McIntjre who poured in a game-high 32 points. Annie Trinh and Gabby Samly each scored 14 points to lead Orange Coast to victory.
