The biggest sporting event in the world began on Thursday and Lemoore's Jesus Garcia and Dwight Miller joined in the festivities when they took in the World Cup opener in Sao Paulo Thursday in Brazil when the host Brazilians took on Croatia in the first match of the World Cup, and won 3-1. Since then the two intrepid explorers have traveled the breadth of Brazil and on Sunday will see the United States take on Portugal deep in the heart of the Amazon jungle in the city of Manaus. Even though a Hanford player fired a blistering 71 in Monday’s West Yosemite League championship tournament, it was the team from Lemoore that took home the first-place championship trophy. Lemoore’s top tennis aces earned a trip to the Central Valley Tennis Tournament, to be held at Hanford’s Sierra Pacific High School on May 16 and 17. Lukas Brown and Michael Sinaga, who won the West Yosemite League championship in doubles, dropped just one set in three matches Friday and Saturday at the Central Section Area tourney at Redwood High School to advance in Valley tournament play. It was another up and down week for Tiger softball. Just two days after turning in an 11 hit performance against Mt. Whitney High School, which resulted in a 5-0 win, the Tigers suffered a disappointing 8-6 loss to defending West Yosemite League champions El Diamante. Kings Christian head baseball coach Keith Thomas and his Crusaders have some work left to do if they hope to repeat as East Sierra League champions. The Crusaders hit a slight bump in the road Wednesday, mustering just six hits in a disappointing 13-4 loss to Orange Cove which came into the game with a 3-5 ESL record. Chalk up another win for Kings Christian High School as it continues to seek another East Sierra League championship. On Tuesday the Crusaders scored three first inning runs and then added another in the fifth to beat Paramount Academy. The Crusaders are 4- in the ESL and 6-3 overall.
